The House of the Virgin Mary

The House of the Virgin Mary ‘’Meryem Ana Evi’’ is located about 7km from Selçuk on Mountain Koressos in the vicinity of Ephesus.

In the 19th century the house was discovered by following the descriptions of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824), a Roman Catholic nun and visionary.

She described the house so vividly that after her death her reported visions were published as a book by Clemens Brentano.

Pilgrims, Christians as well as Muslims, visit the house on the belief that Mary, the mother of Prophet Jesus, was brought to this stone house by Apostle John and spent her last days there before she died.

The shrine had visits from several popes, the earliest one from Pope Leo XIII back in 1896 and the latest visit was in 2006 by Pope Benedict XVI.
